Dear Christopher

This may well be "Bertran and Bimi", collected in Life's Handicap (1891), about a murderous orang-utan.

See
www.telelib.com/authors/K/KiplingRudyard/prose/LifesHandicap/bimi.html, for the story,  and the New Readers' Guide at www.kiplingsociety.co.uk for notes.  Go to   "The stories listed"  in the sidebar, and click on "Bertran and Bimi".

All best,

John Radcliffe

Subject: Story Identification

I've been researching work on British writer Arthur Machen and found a reference in one of his essays to a Kipling story. In the essay, Machen writes in part: "...the example set by Mr. Rudyard Kipling in his story of the horrible ape..."

Unfortunately, I am quite ignorant when it comes the Kipling's work. Could anyone help me identify this story?

Many thanks.
