The library as a public space

An underground library in Sydney's Green Square public plaza has opened, described as a 'space-making not space-taking' design project. Built using complex engineering techniques on land that was once a swamp, Green Square Library is a 2,300 square metre open space with 40 skylights across the roof to provide natural light.

A world travel guide to libraries

Library Planet is a new crowdsourced travel guide to libraries around the world worth taking a closer look at - from wall painting in Wolverhampton to roving robots, kitchens and creativity at Tampines Regional Library, Singapore.

Student Gateway refreshed at University of Sunderland

The project saw the refurbishment of the University of Sunderland’s St Peter’s Student Gateway and library spaces. The refresh included the re-design of the Gateway service desk, the relocation of the library help point and of the library entrance areas, enabling the up-grade of staff work areas, the creation of new student group study and study skills spaces.

New case studies added to Designing Libraries

FG Library & Learning has released three new case studies, providing more information about the library and families hub in Chelmsford, and showcasing the new community library in Woodseats, Sheffield. There's also a profile of the startling new interior of Halton Lodge Primary School, bringing the school thoroughfare to life with thematically zoned areas.

Southwark opens new Grove Vale Library in East Dulwich

The new Grove Vale Library is almost twice as big as its former site, good news for the oversubscribed children’s story-times and rhyme-time sessions. People who use the library were invited to let the council know what they wanted. The name of the library, the extra morning opening hours, new books, free Wi-Fi and some of the many groups and clubs, all reflect the wishes of local users.

Heritage Lottery funding awarded for re-imagining The Harris

Development funding of £180,900 has been awarded by the Heritage Lottery Fund to help Preston City Council and Lancashire County Council progress their plans to establish The Harris as the UK’s first blended museum, art gallery and library.

New look Crowborough Library

Crowborough Library, East Sussex, has re-opened. The new-look library, at Pine Grove, has an expanded children’s area, a newly created space for teens and young adults and comfy reading locations with new furniture.
