Panel on “Austrian-Jewish Culture after 1945” (GSA)
October 3-6, 2019
Portland, OR

This panel will explore Austrian-Jewish Culture after 1945, examining writers, actors, filmmakers, exiles, and other contributors to Austrian-Jewish Culture after 1945, from the first generation right after the Holocaust, including but not limited to Friedrich Torberg, Hans Weigel, Hilde Spiel, Ernst Deutsch, and later generations including but not limited to Robert Schindel, Ruth Beckermann, Robert Menasse, Doron Rabinovici and Julya Rabinowich. How did these cultural figures represent Austria and Jewish life in Austria? How do they relate their memories of the Holocaust? How did they confront the country’s Nazi past? How did they experience 1986 and the election of Kurt Waldheim and the rise of Jörg Haider’s FPÖ? How have cultural productions by Austrian Jews evolved in the Second Republic? Papers may address any aspect of Austrian-Jewish Culture after 1945.

 

Papers on this panel could address, but are not limited, to the following topics:

 

·         The first generation after the Holocaust: Friedrich Torberg, Hans Weigel, Hilde Spiel, Ernst Deutsch

·         Later generations Robert Schindel, Ruth Beckermann, Robert Menasse, Doron Rabinovici, Julya Rabinowich

·         Austrian Jews and the Holocaust

·         Confrontations by Austrian Jews with the country’s Nazi past

·         Austrian Jews and their representations of 1986

·         Changes in Austrian Jewish Culture in the Second Republic
