Dear all,

the Institute of Physics is seeking nominations of a physicist working in the UK
or Ireland for the Giuseppe Occhialini medal.  The winner is selected by the
Italian Physical Society from a shortlist provided by the IoP.

The deadline is Friday 8th February 2019.

There are no guidelines about the field of work or any other characteristic of
the nominee, so I see nothing to rule out the prize going to a geophysicist
- any geophysicist, not necessarily connected with Italy or with Occhialini's
field of research (he helped to discover the pi-meson or pion in 1947
while working at the University of Bristol, according to the Wikipedia).

Please follow the links below if you want to submit a nomination. You
need to find three referees, but they don't have to provide supporting statements
up front, only if asked by the IoP.  They have to be from outside the nominee's
own institution, though.  As far as I can see, none of them needs to be a
member of the IoP.

Regards,
Sheila Peacock,
BGA awards officer.
