Dear GEM
Many thanks to all who have contributed advice regarding our overhaul of feedback cards - I will happily collate and post early next week.
As it is Friday, may I post a question about Robinson Crusoe? It is 300 years this year since the first publication of Daniel Defoe’s novel in which we encounter Friday…is anyone in GEM land doing any work / exhibition / event around this anniversary?
We are paying passing homage on the 20 January when we undertake a search for J G Ballard’s ‘Concrete Island’ in which his near future Crusoe crashes a Jaguar on the A40M Westway
http://www.museumofwalking.org.uk/events/ballard-under-the-westway/ We are going to be discussing the Ballard novel, as well as motorway heritage (who doesn’t love concrete and road demonstrations), but we also feel it would be nice to fly the Daniel Defoe flag too. Hence my question as we would be happy to publicise your efforts when our event runs.
Love to know if this is an anniversary that will be marked or may be overlooked in GEM land……
BTW I found out that Defoe would have been the least likely person to use the term “Girl Friday”, he apparently was an enthusiastic supporter of women’s education.
Best for the weekend, Andrew
