Dear Kev,

interesting that you use „narrative review“ for a systematic review without metaanalysis.
We use

  1. narrative review for a review not using systematic methods
  2. systematic review for  a systematic review
  3. metaanalysis for a systematic review with metaanalyis

Sorry, Mohamed: this is not an answer to your question.

Was your question about doing a systematic review with/without metaanalysis?
Or when doing a scoping review instead of a systematic review?

Betreff: Re: My question about Indications and Contraindications for conducting Systematic Reviews

Dear Carlos and list members,

I am bothered that many terms we use in EBP are potentially misleading to those outside EBP discussions. Here is what I think terms relating to research synthesis studies mean, based on how I have read them used. I welcome comments

Systematic reviews (SR) =   covers all reviews that use a systematic method* and includes 1, 2 and 3

1 Meta-analysis = SR which produces estimates of the size of the effect from the estimates in the all the studies i.e. pools effects. Sometimes called a quantitative review.

2 Narrative review =  SR which does not pool results. Sometimes called a qualitative or non-quantitative review.

3 An SR using qualitative research methods of qualitative research studies.

Problems with terminology

• Some narrative reviews conduct forms of quantitative analysis e.g.plot number of studies with statistically significant/non-significant results versus study quality, so calling them non-quantitative is silly.

• Qualitative SRs (2 above) are definitely not qualitative research.

• To add to the confusion, I have seen the term “narrative” applied to traditional, non-systematic reviews.

* =  A review that searches for, appraises, and synthesises all relevant studies relating to a specific question. It uses explicit and rigorous methods to do so.

Best wishes,

Kev

Dear Mohammed

I think that your doubt is about doing systematic or narrative reviews...Am I correct? I understand that you want to know when we have to do systematic rather doing narrative reviews

Best wishes

Dear List

I am seeking for any reference that explains in detail about when we need to do systematic review and when we should NOT do. Would please send me any good reference you know regarding this topic?
