Hi Ellie and everyone

NATECLA is working with the Reading Agency on a three year project to promote reading for pleasure amongst prisoners with ESOL needs. In the first year of the project we produced an ESOL booklist. But we found the range of suitable books was very limited. So, in the second year, 2018, we decided to run a series of creative writing workshops so that ESOL learners could produce their own writing, which could then be made available for other prisoners with ESOL needs to enjoy.

You can find the collection, 'Words and Memories' on the Reading Agency Website here…Scroll down to November 2018. As well as the collection, there is an  'off the shelf'  guidance pack for teachers or other support workers wanting to replicate the workshops. The pack contains a powerpoint presentation, guidance notes and worksheets. Although some of the pieces in the collection relate to a prison context, the activities are applicable to a range of different settings. It'd be great if the resources could be used more widely by other providers.

Please get in touch if you'd like more information

best wishes

Jenny

Hi Ellie, Jo and everyone else,

You might also want to take a look at Resilience: Stories of Adult Learning, published by RAPAL.  Many of the contributors are ESOL learners.

Hi Ellie

The Open University used to provide some really interesting resources which were developed by the NE and NW region. Might be worth checking if they are still available on line as you could access them through a MOOC at one point and their Open Learn. https://www.open.edu/openlearn/history-the-arts/culture/literature-and-creative-writing/creative-writing

I found some new stuff on the link above but not what I was looking for. However an OU regional centre may still have hard copies in their library, if the local office hasn’t been closed that is.

We used the resources as a way of introducing people to the OU when I was a development manager and they were very practical and effective ways to get words flowing.

Best wishes Jo

Hi,

I’m also really interested in this area. I’d like to develop some Creative writing workshops for people with English as a second language, with the focus on the creative process and the writing content, rather than as a tool to teach ESOL.

Can anyone signpost to any info?

Many thanks.

Best wishes,

Ellie

Dear all,

I wonder, does anyone here have information about any research done in the area of Creative Writing and ESOL, in the UK or abroad? Any pointers would be appreciated much.

Many thanks in advance,

Ayesha
