Subject: Getting past the DRM hurdle

Hi all

This is the second mention of DRM today but it’s possibly the more positive of the two!

Noel Duffy from Dolphin is a fellow member of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Assistive Technology. At a recent event just before Christmas we talked about technical solutions that could respect DRM while at the same time circumventing the Adobe Digital Editions kind of problems we’ve discussed many times before. I asked him to express his ideas in his own words. I believe he is already independently in conversation with a couple of suppliers in this group but I thought it was worth broadening the conversation. In the light of the email conversation with Nick this morning and the issues re getting EPUB3 known and loved, getting past the Adobe Digital editions barrier would be a big leap forward. Dolphin are a mature and well established company and have been involved in the Right to Read Alliance for as long as I can remember so I’d be happy to recommend you contacting Noel if you think this might have value for your own workflows and marketing.

Poor accessibility, often driven by DRM, is a key frustration amongst university librarians and of course students. Dolphin would like to explore with publishers how EasyReader can be used to help promote publisher accessibility in schools and higher ed. To us it appears there are two key issues – from the publisher perspective digital rights management is a double edged sword – it is the biggest blocker to accessible reading but security of the files will continue to be a high priority for publishers. We can help with this. From Dolphin’s perspective having access to an API will probably be a critical issue to make the process scalable. We’re aware that once discussions commence other issues will emerge and we’re happy obviously to enter into discussion about these.

About EasyReader
EasyReader is an easy to use app, available on Windows, iOS and Android. With EasyReader you can say goodbye to frustrating small print and inaccessible reading apps; our app has been designed for readers with dyslexia, low vision and blindness so the accessibility is built in and reads ePub, PDF, doc x, and DAISY formats. Browse your favourite accessible book and newspaper libraries. Make the print as big as you need. Add audio to text only titles.

I’ve copied in Noel so please contact him directly if you want to discuss things further. Alternatively, if there’s interest, we could run an online session for suppliers in this mailing list where you can meet virtually and field your thoughts and questions. I’d be happy to host it.

Alistair
