A Postdoctoral Research Associate position is available at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) in Dr Isabelle Mareschal’s group, to work on emotion recognition in refugee children in Jordan in collaboration with the NGO We Love Reading (http://www.welovereading.org/).

 

Queen Mary is one of the top research-led universities in the UK and was ranked 9th among the UK multi-faculty universities in the Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014). All postdoctoral researchers are part of the QMUL Doctoral College, which provides support with high-quality training and career development activities.

 

The post-holder will conduct research into emotion recognition in refugee children in Jordan in collaboration with the NGO “We Love Reading” and will travel to Jordan three times for periods of 2 weeks each time. They will join a small team of academics who are examining how adverse early life experiences affect non-verbal social communication, focussing on emotion recognition. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to experimental design, stimulus and experimental software generation, running experiments, analysing results and writing conference presentations and research papers. The successful candidate should have a PhD in experimental psychology, cognitive neuroscience, cognitive science or a related field. The candidate should be able to provide evidence of expertise in visual psychophysics or developmental research and should have strong computing skills. Knowledge of emotion perception, face perception and statistical techniques would be an advantage as would a proven record of high quality published research. Self-motivation, an ability to work as part of a team and excellent research management and presentation skills are essential. Translators will assist us in Jordan so knowledge of Arabic is not essential, but would be an asset. 

 

The post is funded by the Waterloo foundation and is a full-time position, available for a period of 1 year. The start date is March 2019. The salary is £33,615 per annum and is inclusive of London allowance. Benefits include 30 days annual leave and a pension scheme.  

Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Where required this may include entry clearance or continued leave to remain under the Points Based Immigration Scheme.
