European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR)
2019 General Conference, Wrocław 4-7 September 2019

Call for papers

Section : International migration from a comparative perspective: policies, practices, and
outcomes.

Panel : Public opinion and forms of mobilisation concerning asylum seekers and
refugees in anti-immigrants times.
Chairs : Alessandro Mazzola (Liège University/Free University of Brussels); Andrea Rea
(Free University of Brussels).

Since the beginning of the so-called reception crisis in 2015, the problematisation of
international migration and the securitisation of EU external borders, in the aftermath of the
global financial crisis, created the conditions for strong polarization of public opinion towards
migrants. This is reflected in the way European and societies deal with the issues of
reception, integration and management of refugees and asylum seekers. Social and political
actors adopt a variety of discourses and strategies going from extreme opposition to
unconditional support. This polarization affect the action of politicians and policy makers,
NGOs and CSOs, as well as activists, mobilized citizens and mobilized migrants.
The aim of this panel is to discuss the factors and social dynamics influencing attitudes
polarisation towards refugees and asylum seekers in contemporary societies. It focuses
on the perception of the European population about refugees and asylum seekers, as well
as the forms of mobilization and the practices of reception and integration developed since
the beginning of the so-called reception crisis in 2015. The panelwill gather quantitative and
qualitative research on public opinion, on- and off-line discourses, attitudes and practices,
on the interactions at the local level between the majority populations and newly arrived
migrants, and on the policy structure developed to provide reception and integration.
Proposals should include a (max) 20 words title and (max) 500 words abstract to be sent
before 11 February 2019 to [log in to unmask] and [log in to unmask]
