Best wishes, Patricia Scalco (University of Helsinki) Liza Dumovich ( Universidade Federal Fluminense) *Short abstract* This panel aims at reflecting on methodological and epistemological specificities of the Lusophone ethnographic production in and about the “Middle East” by asking what are specific and general strands in the production of knowledge about the“Middle East” within and across the borders of Lusitan contexts broadly defined. *Long abstract* As current anthropology challenges paradigms and reaches beyond conceptual, thematic and epistemological frontiers, the area culturally designated as “the Middle East” has become increasingly defined by notions of borders and their power to, symbolically or empirically, separate, isolate or annihilate populations at different scales. Grounded in different anthropological traditions, in academic institutions in Portugal and across the world, Lusophone anthropologists strive to contribute to the understanding of the “Middle East” through their ethnographic work. Engaging with the notion that the researcher’s positionality play a significant role in the (re)production of knowledge, this panel aims at reflecting on methodological and epistemological specificities of the Lusophone ethnographic production in and about the Middle East. We seek to gain perspectives on spatio-temporal general and specific strands of the production of knowledge about the “Middle East” within Lusitan borders and across Lusophone contexts. Nova data final para inscrição de trabalhos: *21 de Janeiro* de 2019. *Resumo curto* Esse painel tem como objetivo refletir sobre as especificidades epistemológicas e metodológicas da produção etnográfica lusófona no e sobre o“Oriente Médio” ao focar nas tendências gerais e específicas da produção de conhecimento sobre o “Oriente Médio” em contextos lusófonos *lato sensu.* *Resumo longo* Enquanto a antropologia contemporânea desafia paradigmas e ultrapassa fronteiras epistemológicas, temáticas e conceituais, a área culturalmente designada como “Oriente Médio” tem se tornado cada vez mais definida por noções de fronteira e seu poder de, simbólica e empiricamente, separar, isolar ou aniquilar populações. Ancorados em diferentes tradições antropológicas e baseados em instituições acadêmicas em Portugal e pelo mundo, antropólogos lusófonos se dedicam a contribuir para o entendimento do “Oriente Médio” através de seu trabalho etnográfico. Partindo da noção de que o lugar de fala do pesquisador desempenha um papel significativo na (re)produção de conhecimento, esse painel visa a refletir sobre as especificidades metodológicas e epistemológicas da produção etnográfica lusófona no e sobre o “Oriente Médio”. Buscando compreender e adquirir perspectivas espaço-temporais sobre tendências gerais e específicas da produção de conhecimento sobre o “Oriente Médio” dentro das fronteiras lusitanas e em outros contextos lusófonos, o painel encoraja, particularmente – embora não exclusivamente - contribuições que reflitam sobre o desenvolvimento da noção de “Oriente Médio” enquanto uma categoria etnográfica entre falantes da Língua Portuguesa, dentro das fronteiras lusitanas, assim como em diferentes contextos lusófonos, sobretudo, nos últimos 30 anos.
