Proposals for 2,500-word short essays are now being sought for a special ‘In Focus’ dossier of Journal of Cinema and Media Studies: diegetic constructions of stardom in film/television.

Papers will consider the discursive construction of stardom in a film or television show and would include a consideration of the rhetoric around ambition, talent, success, and/or the ‘rise and fall’ narrative and/or the positioning of the performer with respect to supporting characters. Papers may canvass the relation between diegetic constructions and wider, historically and industrially specific constructions of fame and notoriety. Papers may consider the link between on-screen performance and extratextual factors such as an actor’s off-screen identity/persona; marketing campaigns of various sorts; audience expectation and fan and critical discourse.

We welcome contributions spanning a range of historical and industrial contexts.

Prospective contributors should send an abstract of 150 words and a brief biography to both dossier editors [log in to unmask] and [log in to unmask] by January 10 2019. Anticipated publication date for the journal is 2020.
