Fair question, Barry. The answer is I have no idea but you may well be right, of course. Anyway, the poem does not seek to speak for European reaction. To these Australian tourist ears, harsh guffaws often contrasted with the joyous sounding brimming-over of locals. To generalise all such laughter as American is no doubt rugged of me. It is the swamping laugh of some ‘entitled’ sounding tourists which I was attempting to sketch.
