From personal experience ( a while ago now!), when I gave live vaccines when pregnant, my risk assessment showed it to be a relatively a low risk activity – contained product, correct sharps handling in place, and I always wore gloves as added protection. As such I did not alter my practice.

Yes that's correct. A breastfeeding staff member has asked about the safety of delivering live vaccines. The greenback does not cover this scenario; I could form a risk assessment on the information there but it is not a robust approach. Also, a little like COSHH assessments, my RA would not take account of multiple exposures within a defined period.
Grateful for any guidance or if any NHS colleagues have defined policies/procedures for this scenario........

The vaccine manufacturers may also be able to help as to whether there is any transmission via breastmilk.

I have an enquiry regarding a new employee who will be breastfeeding when she starts in post as a Nurse.
Obviously I have advised a new mother risk assessment prior to returning to work. Control measures will then be put in place.
However, I need an evidence base regarding the administration of live vaccines when breast feeding. Does anyone have a policy or reference material they would be willing to share?
