Hi, Meg. Thanks for the kind words!
Although I have not previously looked at these beasts on the Pictish 
stones, having only seen the ones in the museum in Edinburgh, I 
certainly see the resemblance. Surely "elephants" is just a use-name!
If I had to make a guess, I would probably have thought of a dog. But it 
is probably best to think of it as just a quadruped, as you say, rather 
like the "Lindisfarne beast", though less generalized than that.
