MDC events 2019 ... Degradation – Profiting from Environmental Catastrophe

Date and time: 27 February 2019 – 12 noon

Location: Clephan Building, 3.01

Event Information: The theme of the afternoon will cover the mechanisms used to exploit natural resources, the profits accrued, the rhetorical explanation for such actions, the oversight, surveillance and violence used to reduce the effects of protest, and the forms of resistance taken up by those who object to the process.  

 

MDC events 2019 ... Generation Revolution: documentary and panel discussion

Event Information: The Media Discourse Centre presents a screening of ‘Generation Revolution’, the acclaimed documentary that, in the words of its creators, tells ‘the powerful story of a new generation of black and brown activists who are changing the social and political landscape in London and beyond’. The event is introduced by Stuart Price and chaired by MDC doctoral candidate and film-maker Beverley Cooper-Chambers. After the screening, a Q&A will follow, directed at a panel that includes a number of activists and artists.

The philosophical elements of constructions of psychopathology

Event Information: Cultural eXchanges is thrilled to be joined by distinguished author, journalist, and broadcaster, Will Self.  He is the author of many novels and books of non-fiction, including Great Apes, The Book of Dave, How the Dead Live (shortlisted for the Whitbread Novel of the Year 2002), The Butt (winner of the Bollinger Everyman Wodehouse Prize for Comic Fiction 2008), Umbrella (shortlisted for the Booker Prize 2012), and Shark.  A significant voice across a number of fields and Professor of Contemporary Thought at Brunel, Will Self's talk addresses constructions of psychopathology with reference to philosophy and culture.  This event is introduced by Professor Jason Lee, Director of Partnerships for the Leicester Media School, Media Health Society/Media Discourse Centre.

MDC events 2019 ... Mark Griffiths, introduced by Prof Rusi Jaspal

Technological addictions: do they really exist?

Event Information: Dr Mark Griffiths is a Distinguished Professor of Behavioural Addiction at Nottingham Trent University. Internationally known for his research on technological addictions, he has published over 1000 papers and book chapters and five books. Mark has won 20 national and international awards and has appeared throughout the media, writing numerous articles for national and international newspapers and magazines. Here he provides the reasons on how and why individuals can be genuinely addicted to behaviours such as gambling, gaming and social media.  His talk is introduced by Professor Rusi Jaspal (DMU) PVC Research.
