Bern University Library, Switzerland serves the faculty, students and staff of Bern University and is also open to members of the general public. With a staff of 280 and a collection of around 4 million items, it provides a wide range of services in support of research, teaching and learning.

The Bern University Library invites applications for the position of Head of Medical Libraries. The start date is March 1st, 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.


The medical libraries comprise of the Fachbereichsbibliothek Bühlplatz that provides mainly medical resources, and four departmental libraries, employing a total of twenty staff members in different teams. Over recent years the library has extended substantially its collections and increased its services to teaching and research (lectures, courses and one-on-one support on systematic searching and academic writing, mediated searches for systematic reviews, clinical guidelines, HTAs, etc.).


As head of the medical library services you will make sure that in your area of responsibility, services are delivered in a professional and efficient manner. You will continue developing modern and innovative library services, and liaise with the medical faculty and other departments of the University Library. You have responsibility for budget and personnel planning. As a member of the senior management board, you will be actively involved in the strategic planning of the whole University Library.
We are seeking for a person with initiative, commitment to customer service, excellent communication, presentation and social skills, with a degree, preferably in medicine or science. Ideally, you would also hold a Master's degree in Library and Information Science. You should have leadership and project management experience, a good overview of teaching and research in the medical field, and a thorough understanding of the concept of evidence-based medicine. You should also be familiar with the corresponding requirements of library services, the methods of systematic literature research and its teaching methods.

Fluency in English and German or at least basic command of German and the willingness to improve your competence is expected.
The position is subject to the regulations and salary scales of the Canton of Bern, Switzerland.
