It's all very exciting and very full world for interactive and engaging experiences at the moment.

In planning for 6 digital tours in a beautiful small historic town I have been trying everything I could. Happy to share some of the testing I've done off list if thats helpful. I've uses Aurasma and this week did some HP Reveal - if anyone has a Clydesdal Bank Fiver then the Forth Bridge image has Gangam Style gif on it now!! I dont find the anchoring hugely reliable across devices, when it works it's got Wow, when it doesnt which is more likely with multiple devices and one anchor, it's a disappointing experience.

The latest iOS can now read NFC and I believe backfills to iPhone 6, although only recent devices will be able to write the tabs. Android has had it for long time. I am planning on using for variety of purposes but they act like QR Codes but have less friction so to me they have more usability. They range in price from pennies to 80p each depending on quantity and i am waiting for a free tester pack from Julia at OOmph https://www.madebyoomph.com/https://www.madebyoomph.com/

These chips can be embeded in posters and the like too which opens a new world of opportunity for marketing but my hope is to have them weaved into materials so users can feel fabrics and tap to get the information most suitable for them. I stress, i havent trialled it yet but happy to chat to anyone with interest in technologies to share project as it develops.

Subject: Re: Linking digital content to an exhibition

Hi Nicola,

We’re looking into using AR in a touring exhibition. I went and spoke to the designer of this exhibition at the Thackray Medical Museum http://irenebrown.co.uk/projects/meeting-point . She used HP Reveal and had some really exciting ideas. The challenge I think is Wi-Fi access. Users need to download the app and the content for your site. Will people be reluctant to use data to do this? Do you have 4G coverage? This is kind of the niggling doubt in my mind. One of the museums we want to loan it doesn’t have Wi-Fi and the curator saw it as a barrier to access for many of their less affluent visitors. A friend however did use it very effectively in a treasure hunt she did as part of the induction of her Geography undergraduates.

Many modern smart phones have a QR reader built into their camera. My iPhone & work Android both recognise QR codes without the app. How much people know this is definitely the big question.

I’d be happy to have a chat on the phone about your ideas. It would help us shape our HLF bid.

Cheers,

Simon Watts

Hi Nicola

I looked into this for an exhibition and the problem I came across was that apart from QR codes there didn’t seem to be anything that would work across both apple and android devices. Having said that, there are some basic augmented reality apps that could work to add media content, but you’d need to do a bit of research. One piece of software is called Aurasma – now HP Reveal, and you can see how Buxton College have used it to create an augmented prospectus here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UjhNYrItV14. I can’t find the exact Youtube video I’m thinking of, but lots of American colleges have started using free AR in things like academic posters or even notices on boards.
I suppose the thing about QR codes is that they are cheap, simple and universal. In terms of people having QR readers, it’s very simple to get them to download a scanner from itunes or the Playstore – they’re free and download quickly.

I hope that’s of some help – I find the AR stuff really exciting.

Best
Lucy-Ann

Subject: Linking digital content to an exhibition

Dear Gem,
I think this subject comes within the list’s remit------? Apologies for incorrect posting if not.
At Alleyn’s School we are putting together an exhibition to mark our 400th anniversary. Down the line we would like to possibly link digital content to the display boards. We did think that QR codes were the way forward but feedback tells us that people, including teenagers, don’t really have the QR scanners on their phones.
What do heritage sites do about this please? We need a low key and cheap solution. The way our site works means that we cannot issue listening devices.
Thank you!
Best wishes,
