New Handbook on the Philosophy of Childhood and Children launched virtually at the Institute for Policy Research.

The Routledge Handbook of the Philosophy of Childhood and Children

Edited by Anca Gheaus, Gideon Calder and Jurgen De Wispelaere

What is it like to be a child?  What do we owe to children?  How does childhood relate to adulthood?  This collection, the first of its kind, features 36 chapters addressing the significance of childhood for philosophy, and philosophy for childhood.  Specific topics covered range from knowledge to war, from art to adoption, and the rights of parents to the age of consent and voting.  The book draws on all major areas of philosophy, including epistemology, philosophy of mind, aesthetics and philosophy of language – but with a particular focus on applied ethics and political philosophy.

Described as an ‘excellent and timely collection’ and ‘an extraordinarily helpful starting point for philosophically informed conversations about children and childhood’, the handbook is a critical overview of the state of art in a rapidly growing field, mapped here for the first time on this scale.

It will be of interest to those working within philosophy on relevant issues, and across the very wide range of disciplines where they arise – and is suitable for the general reader as well as for subject specialists.

Visit our launch page to view short blog posts and videos of our contributors describing their chapters.

The Routledge Handbook of the Philosophy of Childhood and Children is available to purchase now.
