The Royal College of Art is seeking an outstanding researcher and teacher in the History of Design (0.6 FTE), to contribute towards the ongoing work of the School of Arts & Humanities and the RCA more broadly.

The History of Design Programme is jointly offered by the RCA and the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A). Research and teaching on the programme explore cultural, social, economic, political and technological history through artefacts and our interactions with them. Projects and expertise range across global geographies, from the fifteenth century to the contemporary, and draw on cognate areas such as geography, performance studies and design research.

The programme offers three pathways: Design and Material Culture, Performance and Photography. The candidate will teach primarily on the Design & Material Culture pathway, but the ability to offer teaching related to Performance and Photography is welcome.

As well as being able to support and respond to the work of MA and PhD students, the successful candidate will be expected to teach from their own research by delivering workshops, seminars, lectures and crits in V&A/RCA MA History of Design and the other Programmes in the School.

The successful candidate will demonstrate commitment to shaping the future of history of design as a discipline, including exploration of new methods, research areas, interdisciplinary collaborations and modes for bringing history of design thinking and research  to new audiences.

Applicants should have substantial knowledge and experience of emerging and existing research/practice located within the field of design history, and demonstrate experience of working around themes and discourses that will further the diversity of the RCA community. It is essential that candidates have a PhD in a relevant specialism and  demonstrable evidence of, or clear potential to produce, research outputs of at least 3* REF quality in line with the strategic direction of the College.
