If they were too ill to consent, how would the hospital know what religion the person was? (Unless they had had prior contact with the patient - in which case, consent could have been sought then).
It's worth noting that getting it wrong (i.e. having an observant of one religion visit an observant of another, or visit an atheist), could cause significant offence.
