ARLIS/UK & Ireland is delighted to announce the 2018 Research Award winner - Salvatore Bellavia.
The Award Panel were pleased to receive a number of high quality applications for the award this year, which is made possible by the generosity of an anonymous donor and
has been established to support the research activities of librarians, archivists, and curators in the art, architecture and design sector.
Salvatore's research "aims to address the challenges of art librarianship practices in a museum context for queer visual representation, faced in the process of building
heritage collections for wider audiences". The ARLIS Research Award will enable Salvatore to travel to the Leslie-Lohman Museum, Library and Archives, in New York, which is "the only dedicated art museum in the world to exhibit and preserve artwork that speaks
about the LGBTQ experience."
The Award Panel felt the proposed research would be of great interest to ARLIS members, exploring the burgeoning issues of the diverse representation of communities and materials
and hitherto "hidden" voices in canons of literature, and the decolonizing initiatives and critical practice discussions that are taking place in libraries. The Panel also praised the design of the proposed project, and the ambitions for the dissemination
of the research findings which include presenting findings at the ARLIS Conference in Glasgow, 2019, and writing up an article for submission to the Art Libraries Journal.
We offer our congratulations to Salvatore, and encourage future applicants to the award next year. ARLIS also offers a Travel and Study Award, for which applications are
currently open - for more details on this please see https://arlis.net/career/awards-and-scholarships/
