**with apologies for cross-posting** The School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures at the University of Edinburgh invites applications from outstanding PhD candidates for scholarships funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council. The School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures includes Asian Studies, Celtic & Scottish Studies, English Literature, European Languages & Cultures, Film Studies, Islamic & Middle Eastern Studies, Theatre Studies, and Translation Studies. The School has a vibrant international community of 450 postgraduate students and 160 academic staff. We have regular research seminars, and postgraduate students run and edit the peer-reviewed journal Forum, which publishes contributions from postgraduates working on culture and the arts. Students benefit from direct access to the cultural life of Scotland’s capital city, with the National Library of Scotland (one of only six copyright libraries in the UK and Ireland), the National Museum of Scotland, National Galleries, Edinburgh International and Fringe Festivals, and theatres such as the Traverse, Scotland’s theatre for new writing. Colleagues in the German department provide supervision on a broad range of topics, from gender, race and identity, to literary history, textual editing, theatre, translation, and cultural and comparative studies. Chronologically, we cover both Medieval Studies and the eighteenth century to the present. Our innovative Edinburgh German Yearbook, planned and edited within the section and published by Camden House in the USA, attracts high-profile academic contributors with their cutting-edge research. The German department also houses the Karin McPherson Collection of GDR Writing. AHRC scholarships: The University of Edinburgh is part of a consortium of eight Higher Education institutions which has been awarded funding from the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) to support postgraduate studentships and training in the Arts and Humanities in Scotland. Under the Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP) scheme, the consortium - comprised of the Universities of Aberdeen, Dundee, Glasgow, Edinburgh, St Andrews, Stirling, Strathclyde and Glasgow School of Art - will consider applications for doctoral studentship awards in the majority of Arts and Humanities subjects.
