Peer Support Programmes are preventative and promote inclusion, equality, belonging and connection. In fact, the Universities UK Framework for HE recommends that peer support initiatives be integrated into support services within universities. Colleges working towards reducing stigma around Mental Health, and towards improve the wellbeing of their students will benefit from this course. This course is based on, Peer Support in Colleges and Universities: A Manual.

Who is running the course?

Anne Ford and Ruth McCalman, both counsellors, have over 45 years of experience between them in the field of peer support - at Oxford University and other in institutions in the UK and USA - and have run training for peer support trainers in the UK (Oxford University, Glasgow, University of Surrey) and Estonia (University of Tartu).

Who is this course for?

If you work in the counselling, wellbeing, mental health, disability, or student advisor field and are:

·       Exploring the possibility of setting up a peer support programme in your institution

·       In the process of setting up a peer support programme

·       Already running a programme and want to have more peer support trainers trained, both to run trainings and reflective practice groups for trained peer supporters

What can I expect?

By the end of the three-day training you will:

·       Understand the theory behind Peer Support Programmes

·       Take away ideas about how a Peer Support Programme can fit into your setting, especially those that have a multitude of student run programmes

·       Know the key steps to setting up and running a successful peer support programme

·       Experience Peer Support Training first hand both as a student and a Peer Support Trainer, and will gain skills in facilitating Peer Support Training

·       Build a network of colleagues within the Peer Support field

·       Receive a certificate on completion of the course
