Hi Liz
I agree with other respondents here. I once had a situation when working for a 3rd party provider where we were asked by HR of a particularly demanding client to provide single dose measles vaccines to children of employees when the MMR story broke. As our manager was not OH trained (it was a fully comprehensive treatment service with GP and Dental clinics etc as well as OH) she started to look into it until those of us who were OH trained pointed out that we should check the contract and with our employers as we didn’t think we were covered to deal with family members and needed to check the our employer’s stance on MMR. Of course we were told not to even consider it regardless of what the client wanted.

I have also worked in organisations who do send employees overseas on long-term placements with accompanying families. In this instance the department were asked to offer travel health pre-screening and medicals for all family members however this was clearly stated in the departmental terms of reference and SLA.

Overall unless this is explicit in your contract with the organisation, then you could be working outside of your remit here. Not sure that contacting the NMC would help as they tend not to really understand OH but if you are an RCN member they will offer advice and support.

Hi

This is what I’m trying to do. Our contract says nothing about seeing dependents and this is the first time since I started working with them in April that it’s been expected.

Kind regards

Liz

I think that you need to go back and see what your agreement is .Some (but a few services ) will provide family members access to EAP schemes but none that I know of would ever expect a report . That makes me wonder what those folk consented to before you saw them ?
Think you need to run that train of events before you agree to anything

Subject: [OCC-HEALTH] Referral Dilemma

Dear All

I need some advice on a dilemma that has recently confronted me.

I provide an OH service to a specific industry via their welfare service but last week had 2 dependents of industry staff booked in to see me. Both have complex health issues but I felt uneasy about what expectations they and the Welfare service had regarding potential outcomes. I am currently having a dialogue with the Welfare team regarding the reason for these dependents being referred and what they want from me. My concern is whether this puts me in a legally, ethically or morally difficult position. I had no prior warning that these were not industry staff and now I have been asked to submit an OH report for each. I feel very uneasy about this and would appreciate some advice.

Many thanks

Liz
