Hello everyone.

We are soon to be in a position to begin cataloguing our archive of historic institutional images i.e. our history in pictures.

Do you know of a set of principles that can assist in cataloguing images so I can put them in to a regular LMS? Or do you think it's best to use some social media platform that automatically does a lot of the job for you e.g. I have uploaded some of my own photos in to both Onedrive and Google docs and noticed some very interesting auto cataloguing based upon the images and some of the metadata carried across from being taken on a phone like date/time/location.

I am toying with going back to Ranganathan's five categories i.e. personality, matter, energy, space, time, in order to introduce a systematic approach and a hierarchy because I don't think a regular approach (as per a book or audio recording) will work.

It's not just images, but artefacts too (e.g. college branded Christmas hat, Batik picture, Islamic inlaid table, book signed by JRR Tolkien, etc. ), so I guess any responders dealing with museum collections giving advice would also be welcome and maybe other people would appreciate your insights, so please post back to the list rather than just to me.

Sincerely,

Keith Lang, BSc(Eng), PGCE, QTS, DipHE, MScEcon, ACLIP
