Hi Dan,

It sounds as though the standard and template will go a long way towards addressing the issue of acknowledging specialist contributions to grey lit. reports – this is good news! However, I think there will still be a problem in relation to accessibility, whether people wish to access grey lit. via an HER or direct from the grey lit. library, in that nowhere will there be any indication that a specialist report exists without looking at each grey lit. report to check. This is the issue that seemed most pressing at our recent workshops, since it means that these specialist reports still cannot easily be tracked down – this is what most people were complaining about.

I can’t think of a straightforward solution to this problem that doesn’t create an additional burden for HERs but I would be really interested if someone else can!

Thanks,

Alice

Hi all,

A very relevant issue which Alice raised in her report for CIfA - Review of the Standard of Reporting on

Archaeological Artefacts in England https://www.archaeologists.net/publications/reports

There was a session at last year’s CIfA conference organised by Stewart Bryant and Edmund Lee – Write Here, Write Now, which began the process to revise the standard for evaluation reports and develop a template.  This is on-going, and does include the need for evaluation reports to include specialist reports (and in a digital format, rather than embedded in a document), named specialists, etc…. This may well help to identify specialist reports – but through the report rather than indexed on the HER.  The draft standard will be out for consultation in the New Year (I think…)

Best wishes

Dan
