FIFTH CAMBRIDGE UNDERGRADUATE CONFERENCE IN GERMAN STUDIES

“GRENZENLOSE MÖGLICHKEITEN”

Saturday 9 February 2019

Contact: [log in to unmask]

The fifth Cambridge Undergraduate Conference in German Studies will be taking place at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, on Saturday 9 February 2019. This year’s keynote speaker will be Hamed AlHamed, a designer and refugee from Syria who now lives in Germany. He regularly presents on Syria, his journey to Germany, and the experience of living as a refugee.

Undergraduates of German Studies, or a degree containing an element of German, at universities in the UK and Ireland are invited to apply to present a 15-minute paper on an aspect of the topic “Grenzenlose Möglichkeiten”. Mentoring for speakers will be available from Cambridge postgraduates. Travel expenses and free accommodation are provided for undergraduate speakers.

Applications for speakers: Please fill in the registration form and submit an abstract (150-200 words) for a 15-minute presentation:

There will be a £10 registration fee to cover lunch and refreshments, and assistance can be provided in finding accommodation.

We aim to put together as diverse a programme as possible; presentations in German or English are warmly welcomed. We are looking for a range of papers dealing with this theme in many senses, encompassing ideas such as political and geographical borders, or more broadly, figurative borders such as those of gender, history, literature or film. In previous years, speakers have developed topics and themes from year abroad projects and dissertations.

Please submit abstracts by Friday 23rd November 2018.

Successful applicants will be informed by 30th November. NB: due to time constraints, some applicants may be offered the chance to present and display a poster.

Registration (for speakers and attendees) will open shortly; a link for online booking will be available on the conference website: https://www.mml.cam.ac.uk/german/undergraduates/conferences
