Hello everyone,

We’ve been implementing a new DAMs for our digitized images, with a publicly accessible viewer over the last few months. We’re currently looking at how best to manage the subject terms field, and are considering recognised controlled vocabularies. However, as a substantial amount of content we’ll be posting is specific to our institution we’re almost certainly going to need a hybrid of a recognised vocabulary and a bespoke one, if not completely bespoke.

For published vocabularies we are considering:

UKAT

LCSH Subject Headings

Library of Congress Thesaurus of Graphic Materials

I’d be interested to hear from other people who’ve used controlled vocabularies, either those above or others, for enabling this type of discovery. I’d also be interested in hearing the experiences of anyone who chose to create a bespoke/hybrid vocabulary for this purpose.

Please note this is not selection of a controlled vocabulary for our main finding aids, but specifically to enable discoverability of our digitized content.

Please reply off list and I’ll summarise responses.

Thanks in advance,

Alexandra Healey
