Research Associate in Plant Health Modelling (167789)

There is potential for this post to continue beyond the advertised 12
month duration

Salary: £32,236 (fixed due to funding)
FTE: 1.0
Term: Fixed (12 months)
Closing Date: 27 November 2018

Following the establishment of the Scottish Centre of Expertise in Plant
Health (www.planthealthcentre.scot/), a new exciting position of a
Research Associate in Plant Health Modelling has been created, to
develop skills, expertise and capacity in in this area. This post is a
joint appointment between the University of Strathclyde and BioSS. The
Centre of Expertise in Plant Health, one of five such Centres funded by
the Scottish Government (Rural & Environment Science & Analytical
Services, RESAS), has been created in early 2018. The Centre has
identified a research and knowledge exchange gap in the area of
modelling and data analysis of plant pests and pathogens. To address
this, a new post of a Research Associate in Plant Health Modelling has
been created, as a joint initiative of the Centre, the University of
Strathclyde and the Biomathematics and Statistics Scotland (BioSS).

The post holder will collaborate with scientists at Strathclyde and
BioSS and at other institutions comprising the Centre as well as across
the wider community, will develop their own research portfolio, and will
assist with funding applications, policy development and knowledge
exchange. We are seeking individuals who can demonstrate experience in
quantitative subjects like mathematics, statistics, physics or
computing, and willingness to work across disciplines and to engage with
stakeholders and policy makers. As this post is a joint appointment
between the University of Strathclyde and BioSS, the post holder will be
expected to interact effectively with both project Principal
Investigators (Kleczkowski and Marion) and regularly commute between
both locations (Glasgow and Edinburgh, respectively). The post is
initially for 12 months, but there is a possibility that the contract
will be extended.

To be considered for the role, you will have a PhD (or equivalent
professional experience) in a quantitative discipline with a large
modelling component e.g. applied mathematics, mathematical biology,
statistics, physics, and informatics. and will have previous experience
in development and implementation of modelling tools and/or data
analysis. You will also have knowledge of appropriate research methods;
have an ability to plan and prioritise your own workload under general
supervision, and an ability to work within a team environment.

Whilst a Research Associate is ideally sought for this position,
applications from candidates who are close to PhD completion or whose
award is pending are welcome. In such circumstances, the appointment
will be made at Research Assistant level (RS06 salary scale: £27,830 -
£31,302) and duties will be adjusted to reflect the grade of the post.
This will continue until the PhD award is confirmed, at which point the
duties and grade will be revised accordingly.

For informal enquiries, please contact Adam Kleczkowski, Professor in
Mathematics, at [log in to unmask] or on 0141 548 3657.

Interviews for this post have been scheduled for 05 December 2018.
