medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Speak for yourself, Kurt.

I'm guessing that Meg's "priest Guğmundr" is the well known Guğmundr Arason, on whom see (e.g.)

It's a shame people don't name their kids Guğmundr anymore, by the way.

Dear Paul and others,

it is indeed a miracle story, written in the early 14th c. We are told that before hearing confession, the priest Guğmundr washed his hands so that the water was colored by them (!). The water was used in a cure. It seems to be just a casual hand-washing, I wanted to be sure I wasn't missing anything.

Meg

Meg, could you tell us more about the account you have of the priest washing his hands before confessions? Where? When? A miracle story? A confessor's manual? A ritual book of some kind? Otherwise it is pretty hard to process a general inquiry like this across centuries of religious praxis. I presume that your question relates to the Middle Ages, so references to 21st-century practices are unlikely to be relevant unless there is some reason to posit detailed continuity of practice. A quick glance at the footnotes of the 2011 Vatican document Sussidio_per_Confessori<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.clerus.org%2Fclerus%2Fdati%2F2011-05%2F20-13%2FSussidio_per_Confessori_en.pdf&data=02%7C01%7C%7Cb14f99de17ba4274bf3708d62e8546d9%7Ce285d438dbba4a4c941c593ba422deac%7C0%7C0%7C636747547294676564&sdata=WBBfBztOGhIrE8D2guxVe%2FU3wkmIRyMRv1ZUb0zSLgs%3D&reserved=0> mentioned below shows that, except for a couple of notes referring to Vatican II, none pre-date the papacy of John Paul II, so it is extremely unlikely to provide useful historical information about anything much.

For what it's worth, I've never heard of what you mention. Possibly you could try looking at Dictionnaire d'archéologie chrétienne et de liturgie under some likely key-words such as laver, lavabo, penitence, mains, purification, and so on, but it would be laborious and the volumes (at Gallica and elsewhere) are frustrating to access systematically online. -- Paul

Greetings all,
I am wondering whether there was a liturgical reason (or requirement) for a priest to wash his hands before the sacrament of confession (i.e. others are confessing to him)? I have an account of a priest doing so, and the water used performs a cure. He washes his hands before the confession, though, not afterwards.
Thanks in advance,
Meg
