medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture Thanks Tom and others! Interestingly it was the Clare Fanger of Societas Magica who came up with the undoubted answer, the 8 beatitudes of Matth. 5! If you study magic you have to be good at numerology! Never did know all the words to "Green grow the rushes" (thought it was "three rivals" rather than "three arrivals". It is the same basic idea, but in the English version there is even less that makes sense religiously. The Icelandic version is set up in "question answer" form, and I don't know of a tune to it - though I'm going to ask! Is the song ‘green grow the rushes-o’ a version of this poem? Anne From: medieval-religion - Scholarly discussions of medieval religious culture [mailto:[log in to unmask]] On Behalf Of Cormack, Margaret Jean Sent: 23 October 2018 12:50 To: [log in to unmask] Subject: Re: [M-R] counting down holy items medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture Dear all, I am looking at a post-Reformation poem that nonetheless has some pre-Reformation features. It was used in later times as a sort of catechism. For the record, it was known to an old woman in the account I have (which is one of several). My question is, what are the 'eight noble blisses' ? what is normally associated with the number eight? The queries begin with 'what were twelve?' ´the apostles'. 11? the 11,000 virgins. 10? 10 commandments. 9? the nine choirs of angels. EIGHT? THE EIGHT NOBLE ( or perhaps NATURAL) BLISSES (literal translation) 7 gifts of the holy spirit, 6 vessels in Cana in Galilee (presumably containers of the water that were changed into wine) 5 books of Moses, 4 evangelists, 3 patriarchs, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob (I would expect in pre-Reformation times that 3 would have been the trinity) 2 books of Moses, 1 God. Any suggestions greatfully appreciated!
