Introduction to Moving Image Metadata

Introduction to Moving Image Metadata will introduce what metadata is and explain why archivists and cataloguers need it. You’ll be introduced to different schemas for moving image metadata and descriptive metadata, and learn to map metadata across different systems with practical exercises. We’ll highlight the value of ontology, and focus on ‘metadata in practice’, looking at pragmatic approaches to metadata and management systems.

Intended for:

Film and TV archivists and senior archivists
Archivists and cataloguers in production companies
University librarians, learning resources officers and IT managers responsible for moving image content

The course includes lunch and a follow-up online workshop, delivered after course completion so you can refresh your knowledge.

Metadata in Practice: Latest developments in Audiovisual Metadata Standards

Latest developments in Audiovisual Metadata Standards builds on the knowledge and skills learnt in our Introduction to Moving Image Metadata course, and introduces cutting edge applications of metadata, and how they are important to you, your collection, and most importantly your users. Building on schemas and taxonomies covered in the introductory course, you’ll investigate emerging digital technologies for documenting audiovisual collections and how they can be applied in novel ways to widen access, self-maintain and provide new insights on your resources.
 
You’ll be introduced to different schemas for moving image metadata and descriptive metadata, and learn to map metadata across different systems with practical exercises. We’ll highlight the value of ontology, and focus on ‘metadata in practice’, looking at pragmatic approaches to metadata and management systems.

If you have not already attended our introductory course, then you are expected to have:
A good understanding of metadata types, schemas, and standards for audiovisual resources.
Knowledge of digital preservation practices and strategies.
Practical understanding of web/CMS technologies and presenting digital collections online.
