Ray Ockenden (Oxford):
Classical and Neo-Classical Eddies in Mörike's 'Idylle vom Bodensee'

Dr Ockenden will consider the strange neglect of this work and suggest the need for fresh consideration. Having briefly outlined the plot and surveyed the history of the poem's writing, he will talk about Mörike's relationship to the world of classical literature as reflected in this poem, and also his relationship to Neo-Classicism, with particular reference to Goethe, touching on the question of genre, and on the issue of metrics.

Venue: Room 243, Senate House, University of London, Malet Street, WC1E 7HU
