Hi Anne-Marie

Taking inspiration from National Museums Liverpool who offer days for home educators, we have developed a home educator programme at Leeds Museums and Galleries.

We advertise a date with a morning workshop and a repeated afternoon workshop, which individual families can book onto. The workshops are based on the format of school workshops, but differentiated for groupwork of families who may or may not know each other, a wider range of ages, and SEND. And opportunities for adults to learn together with the children. Currently our workshop cost covers the cost of a facilitator, so we charge £3 per child (plus £1 entry per child at our charging sites) and have 20 children per session, accompanying adults are free. But you could canvas opinion about this, as I’m sure some families would be happy to pay more.

Age groups – workshops have a recommended age group, e.g. 5-11 years and specify if younger siblings can come. Some workshops, due to the content or handling activities, are restricted to certain ages, e.g. age 8 years+ only.

We offer approximately 1 home educator day per month across our different museums and galleries. The sessions are relaxed, sociable and fun to deliver. Things to be ready to be flexible for – a few late arrivals due to traffic/transport, discovering some of the SEND/access needs during the workshop. But you have a higher ratio of adults who know their children best and are very supportive of the programme.

I’m about to go on maternity leave, so if you have any questions, please get in touch with Lifelong Learning Manager, Kate Fellows – [log in to unmask]

Good luck and best wishes

Natalie

Dear Gemmers,

Apologies I know that this topic is a well worn path.  If anyone has compiled responses I would be really grateful.  We are looking at developing our offer for home schooled groups.  Any hints/ tips/ warnings?

In particular about:

Catering for differing levels in the same session

Pricing and staffing

Resources.

All the best,

Anne-Marie Sandos
