Dear Community Psychology UK Colleagues,

Hope this email finds you well. For any of you who might be attending the American Evaluation Association's annual conference, Evaluation 2018, in Cleveland, Ohio I wanted to let you know of an exciting opportunity that has been designed with community psychologists in mind. By way of introduction, I’m Jeff Sheldon, 2018 Chair of the American Evaluation Association’s Community Psychology Topical Interest group (CP TIG) and for the past five years during the annual conference a small group of intrepid attendees has left the cozy confines of the conference venue and visited with the staff and constituents/clients of a local, community-based organization for a shared learning experience. This year’s Walk-The-Talk event, hosted by Providence House (https://www.provhouse.org/), will be led by two of our most excellent CP TIG leaders, Erica Clarke and Shawn Donnelly. One of the more exciting aspects of Walk-The-Talk this year is that we’ll be discussing the ways in which Providence House “speaks truth to power” (the conference theme) in terms of its experiences challenging local and regional power structures to benefit its clients and constituents. A little bit about Providence House:

“For 37 years, Providence House has protected at-risk children, supported families through crisis, and strengthened communities to end child abuse and neglect. As Ohio's first Crisis Nursery it has cared and advocated for over 8,000 families and children in crisis while delivering a holistic, integrated program focused on keeping kids safe and preserving families. Their nationally recognized, evidenced-based model prevents child abuse and neglect, reduces system involvement and foster care placements, and keeps families safe, stable, and together.”

The agenda for Walk-The-Talk as facilitated by Shawn Donnelly and Erica Clarke (CP TIG Leaders) and Natalie Leek-Nelson, Annette Iwamoto, Michelle Walsh (Providence House) is as follows:

If you’re unsure about how the logistics for Walk-The-Talk will work we’ve put together (with some assistance from our Cleveland colleagues) this handy guide:

Please meet in the lobby of the Convention Center facing Lakeside Avenue on November 1st at 3:30 sharp and be ready to go: wear comfortable clothes and shoes, dress for the weather, and bring exact fare for the bus if you plan on taking public transportation, $2.50 per trip.

Providence House is located at 2050 West 32nd Street, Cleveland, OH 44113, 2.1 miles from the Cleveland Convention Center. If you’re traveling on your own and not familiar with the ways of Cleveland, whichever mode of transportation you choose please make sure you leave yourself plenty of time. The 22, 45, and 51C buses (you can check for others using the link provided) will get you there for (http://www.riderta.com/). To the greatest extent possible we will try to travel together so no one gets lost and everyone makes it to Providence House by 4:00. Car-pooling and shared cabs or Uber/Lyft are certainly options. This link to Google Maps https://goo.gl/maps/L2xzfXLu6Jq shows you some of, and maybe even the best routes to take, plus estimated travel time:

  *   Uber/Lyft/Taxi/Personal Car: ~ 10 minutes
  *   Walk: ~45 minutes
  * Public transportation – GCRTA bus (involves some walking): ~21 minutes

According to Annette Iwamoto, Strategic Initiatives Manager at Providence House, and Clara Palfrey, Evaluation Director of the Clinical and Translational Science Collaborative at Case Western Reserve University the 22 bus is probably the best public transportation option as it will drop you off right across the street from Providence House; the RTA Bus 22 schedule and route is attached (page 2 is for M – F trips). Leaving a bit of extra time, it would be best to catch the 22 bus at Superior Ave. & West 3rd St. at 3:35 PM or 3:40 PM. Arrival at Loraine Ave. & W. 32nd is estimated between 3:34 and 3:49 PM. Here is the Google Map with directions and times<https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Superior+Av+%26+w+3rd+St+United+States/Providence+House+Inc,+West+32nd+Street,+Cleveland,[log in to unmask],-81.7108025,15z/am=t/data=!4m19!4m18!1m5!1m1!1s0x8830f07e6a1c6d87:0x5f25dcc8b62ba6e1!2m2!1d-81.695319!2d41.49898!1m5!1m1!1s0x8830f014acffdef1:0xb6bd0d65ac717f45!2m2!1d-81.7086574!2d41.4811436!2m3!6e0!7e2!8j1541086320!3e3!5i1?hl=en&authuser=0>. To get to the 22 bus stop, about a 10 minute walk (.6 miles) from the Convention Center: go right out the door (northeast) on Lakeside; right on E. Mall Drive then follow the walkway; right on St. Clair Avenue; and left on 3rd - the bus stop is at Superior and 3rd. As we’ve never been to Cleveland please check to make sure all directions are correct; we’re pretty confident they are, but best to double-check.

Clara notes an easy alternative transportation option is the Redline RTA RAPID train from Tower City-Public Square (downtown) to Ohio City at W.25th Street. The W.25th St. train station is right across the street from the West Side Market, one of the must-see locations in Cleveland (one of the oldest continuously-operating indoor markets in America)! Providence House is then a short 10-minute walk down Loraine Ave. to W. 32nd St. Google Map directions by train.<https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Tower+City-Public+Sq+Stn,+Cleveland,+OH/Providence+House+Inc,+West+32nd+Street,+Cleveland,[log in to unmask],-81.7108841,15z/am=t/data=!3m1!4b1!4m19!4m18!1m5!1m1!1s0x8830f07ee2f78c8d:0x97f646cc865ce218!2m2!1d-81.693986!2d41.497524!1m5!1m1!1s0x8830f014acffdef1:0xb6bd0d65ac717f45!2m2!1d-81.7086574!2d41.4811436!2m3!6e4!7e2!8j1541085420!3e3!5i6?hl=en&authuser=0>

Once we’re at Providence House our visit will be facilitated by Natalie Leek-Nelson, Annette Iwamoto, Michelle Walsh from Providence House, and Erica and Shawn from the CP TIG per the agenda. Making a donation to our Walk-The-Talk host site has been a long-standing tradition of the CP TIG going back to our first organizational visit. A donation in any amount to Providence House is not required, but is highly encouraged to help them further their mission and work, and to thank them for their gracious hospitality. You can donate directly on their website (https://www.provhouse.org/) or by check/cash on the day of.

We expect to be at Providence House until at least 5:15, depending on our time of arrival. Because many TIG business meetings begin promptly at 6 p.m. we will need to be back on the road no later than 5:30. To get back to the Convention Center simply reverse course.

That said, when putting together your conference schedule we’d like you to give the CP TIG’s Walk-The-Talk event every consideration. If you think you’ll be attending, or at least leaning in that direction please let me know ([log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>) by this coming Friday, 26 October, midnight PT; space is limited to 25 people, max.

Thank you on behalf of the 2018 CP TIG Leadership Team
