FOR INFORMATION

THE EQUIANO SOCIETY has been awarded over £66k from the Heritage Lottery Fund to celebrate in 2019, the 225th anniversary of Olaudah Equiano’s book: THE INTERESTING NARRATIVE. The project will include community workshops, presentations, BEN television broadcasts that provide information about the book, his life and times. The project will also re-produce 200 hard copies of the original Narrative and a PDF copy, which include his text, footnotes, cover, and design. Publications of The Interesting Narrative after 1794 have excluded those original features. There are few original copies of his books in existence today.

The PDF version will be available free of charge and downloadable on the project's website.  The TV broadcasts will be available on YouTube as well as our website and a means of assisting High School pupils who are taking 'history' GCSE examinations. The broadcasts will also help the public to better understand Equiano's life and times. Working with the American International Church and St Andrews Church (Soham, Cambridge, where Equiano married Susannah Cullen in 1792), the project will create an Equiano Exhibition which the Churches and Croydon Supplementary Education Project will host during 2019.

The Equiano Society is an organisation that includes individuals who promote research and provide information to the public. It was established in London, England, in 1996 to celebrate and publicise the achievements of Olaudah Equiano, also known as Gustavus Vassa, and his African contemporaries including: Ignatius Sancho and Ottobah Cugoano who made outstanding contributions to European literature and culture. The Equiano Society holds heritage events that are open to the general public, but does not operate as a membership organisation.
