We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher with a strong track record in infectious
disease modelling and good computational skills to contribute to the DEFOG project:
Data science tool for Epidemic FOrecastinG of Prof. Niel Hens (see attachment for project
description). The project should start end of January 2019 at the latest and lasts for
18months. Longer appointment might be possible after positive evaluation.

Profile:
Diploma:
MSc and PhD in statistics, biostatistics, epidemiology, public health, applied
mathematics, data science or similar scientific fields.
Expertise:
• Proven track record in epidemiological and/or infectious disease modelling, experience
with disease surveillance systems and capable of extending the model described in
Michiels et al., BMC Infect Dis 2017 to include new, complementary datasets (see
project description).
• Experience with data integration and/or data visualisation techniques is considered
advantageous as the software tool should allow for flexible inclusion of data providers’
own data and dynamic visualisation of the model results.
• Experience with working in an interdisciplinary context is desired as regular
interaction with stakeholders in the health care sector (pharmacies, pharma
companies, hospitals etc) is anticipated.
• You are a team player but capable of working in an independent way.

and consultancy in applied statistics, biostatistics, bioinformatics & statistical
bioinformatics, and mathematical statistics. The infectious disease modelling group (~15
members), led by Prof. Hens, has particular research expertise in microbial and
toxicology risk assessment, mathematical, biostatistical and longitudinal, spatiotemporal,
SIR-type, stochastic, agent-based, contact pattern and network models and
disease mapping. Hasselt University is a young, innovative university with about 6300
