Risk factors for recurrent suicide attempts in Substance Use Disorders outpatients
Sixty-one percent of people with substance use disorders who attempt suicide report recurrent suicide attempts, and these individuals have potentially avoidable or treatable risk factors, particularly psychiatric hospitalization, sedative use disorders in women, and nicotine dependence in men, according to research published in the Journal of Affective Disorders.

Suicide prevention is a top priority in the treatment of substance use disorders as recurrent suicide attempts are common in this patient population and are associated with suicide mortality. Read more

Egypt launches largest screening campaign for Hepatitis C in the world
Egypt will launch the largest medical screening campaign for Hepatitis C in the world by applying a new initiative to detect and treat Hepatitis C to almost 50 million citizens, Presidency spokesman Bassam Rady announced.

The initiative follows the “Tahya Masr” fund President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi announced in February which seeks to completely eliminate Hepatitis C in Egypt by 2020.

The campaign will run from October 2018 until April 2019, targeting people aged 19 to 59 who will be scanned through PCR tests. Those testing positive for the disease are expected to undergo further check ups and will be provided free medication. Read more

Less new opioid use, more treatment offers signs of hope in new U.S. national survey
Last week's release of data from the 2017 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) offered some hope around progress in combating the opioid crisis, with decreases in several categories of use and increases in treatment episodes for opioid use disorders.


Still, the overall numbers indicate that the nation hasn't yet turned the corner on a staggering treatment gap for individuals with substance use disorders. Moreover, a presentation of the survey results from the Department of Health and Human Services' (HHS's) assistant secretary for mental health and substance use identified several populations about which there is growing concern, including pregnant women and youths transitioning to adulthood.
