Der Irma and fellow SEDA Colleagues,

At the Teaching Commons at York University (in Ontario, Canada) I have been leading a course called EduCATE. The longer course name is the Education, Curriculum, and Teaching Excellent Course. We are currently in our 4th iteration.

This is a one year course where faculty engage in a SoTL project. They meet as a large group and as smaller Action Learning Sets on a monthly basis. In addition to submitting a reflective paper/draft of an article they intend to submit for publication, participants are required to present at our annual Teaching in Focus conference.

If you would like a more detailed course descriptions including course outcomes I have included a link to our website: https://teachingcommons.yorku.ca/for-cds/workshops-and-courses-for-cds/courses/educate/

Please do not hesitate to get in touch if you have any further questions though!

Mandy

Dear Colleagues,

At Utrecht University, the Netherlands, the concept of Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) is very new and not many teachers do research on their own teaching. In November I will start with a new course on SoTL in which we want to engage teachers (about 8-12participants) , particularly of the faculty of Science, into research on education through SoTL: so let them formulate a question based on their own teaching experiences, do literature research, set up a study, use quantitative and qualitative methods to investigate student learning, and disseminate their results in meetings and through publication.

As this is very new to us I would like to ask if any of you can share their experience with SoTL-courses like I describe above? Do you have any tips, do’s and don’ts for me?

In addition I am very interested in investigating the effect of SoTL-courses like this, and other educational development courses, on teachers, students and the organisation. Can anyone share their experience with me, what kind of research questions have you investigated and what methods did you use? (E.g. publication about the results).

I also am interested in sharing experiences about SoTL  through collaboration and maybe visits to your institute/university. So if you have an idea about possibilities it would be great to come in contact. I will be attending the ISSoTL in Bergen this year so maybe I can meet someone there.

Thank you very much in advance
Irma
