| Hi, We have some bar-coding in place here – our most extensive use of it is bar-coding solander boxes where we store prints, drawings and photographs, but we also use bar-coding on the packaging for individual items. What experience does anyone have of using barcodes in collections management? We are an independent historic site museum, and use AdLib for our documentation. We have three distinct types of object collections: less than 1,000 accessioned objects, mostly in store, some on display; up to 2,000 items of set-dressing for buildings, inventoried rather than accessioned; a growing volume (more than 2,000, less than 10,000) of archaeological small finds, accessioned and stored as assemblages, primarily for research and reference use. We are just about to start a collections management project that will complete an ongoing collections rationalisation process and prepare stored items for an anticipated future move, and it has been suggested that individual barcoding for larger items, and barcoding for storage boxes, could make life easier. It's a new thought for us, but on the face of it one that seems worth investigating. All comments welcome.
