Challenging Library Branding
A special session in the 7th International Conference on Typography &
Visual Communication (ICTVC)
Patras, Greece, 19-21 June 2019

INTRO: Experts claim that branding is more than the sum of its parts,
being -among others- the establishment of an identity, the visual and
aesthetic representation, the marketing priorities and the audience
solicitation, the reflection of cultural characteristics and so on. But
branding libraries is a difficult task, as certain constituents are
missing from this equation. Libraries are organizations that operate in
an environment where competition coexists with cooperation, value is
hard to be assessed, serving communities can be idiosyncratic, and
balancing between serving, conserving and progressing is a very
stretching exercise.
In this special session of the 7th ICTVC we are seeking for intriguing
cases of library branding development and application. Papers are
invited to take into consideration the changes in the sociopolitical,
economic and cultural environment, the advances in library spaces and
the symbiosis of physical and digital, as well as the impact of new
technologies on their library branding research.

WHO: This session is primarily addressed to library and design
professionals who have worked the last four years on studying,
developing and applying library branding cases. If you cannot decide if
this session is for you, please email the coordinator Giannis Tsakonas
at [log in to unmask]

WHAT: Papers submitted to the ICTVC scientific committee should describe
work that has neither been previously published nor is under review by
another conference. Proposals for individual speakers should be for
30-minute presentations and must include the following:
1. Title
2. Speaker(s') names
3. Abstract (300 words)
4. Speaker biography (100 words)
5. Contact information
Submission of proposals for this session will be streamlined as the rest
submissions through EasyChair, a comprehensive conference paper
management system, which can be found at
https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=7thictvc2019. Please add
[Library Branding Session] as keyword when submitting.

Deadline for submissions: 31 October 2018.

SELECTION CRITERIA: The evaluation criteria include: relevance of the
topic to the conference theme, quality and clarity of the abstract,
originality and timeliness of the topic.

NOTIFICATION OF ACCEPTANCE: The Scientific Committee will respond no
later than 20 February 2019.

SPEAKER BENEFITS: Each main speaker will be registered to attend the
conference at no cost; in case of several authors, a reduced fee (50%)
will be available. In accepting a proposal, ICTVC does not make any
financial commitment to the speaker, such as paying a fee or reimbursing
travel expenses.

SPEAKER OBLIGATIONS: As part of their obligations, speakers are required
to provide a suitable abstract of their presentation, including images
as appropriate that might be printed in a volume that will be
distributed to all participants. All content will be provided with a
CC-BY license.

MORE ABOUT ICTVC: The 7th ICTVC will take place from 19 to 21 June 2019
in Patras, Greece. The conference will be organised by the Institute for
the Study of Typography & Visual Communication in collaboration with the
Library & Information Centre of the University of Patras and will be
supported by academic and professional organisations. A series of
workshops will precede the conference and a range of exhibitions will
frame and enrich the main event. Since its inception in 2002, ICTVC has
been established as one of the most prominent international events in
its field. Supporting open, meaningful dialogue, the conference attracts
people from many different countries and disciplines who share a passion
for research, education, and practice in relation to typography and
visual communication.
ICTVC’s thematic areas are informed by its previous events, and
formulated in response to the sociopolitical, economic and cultural
environment. It places this discourse in the context of the impact of
new technologies on research, theory, history, education and practice in
typography, printing, publishing, and other visual communication
disciplines.
The 7th ICTVC 2019 theme is "Challenging design paths". We will examine
the value of design for visual communication and provoke participants to
challenge current assumptions.
