HI All

Just had a quick look at this job, and I think Kim’s right: this is a part-time, fixed term contract. The bit in the particulars which says that 'all tax and insurance (presumably NICs) are the responsibility of the post-holder’ is probably unlawful given that the rest of the document is written in terms that strongly suggest that the intention is to create a contract of employment, not a contract for services.

Perhaps we could ask the GEM office to take this ad down, and refer it back to the people in Soham asking them to produce some evidence that the arrangements they are proposing are likely to be acceptable to HMRC? If you sign up to a contract like this and HMRC thinks that you are really an employee rather than a bona-fide contractor then you and the employer can both get into very expensive hot water.

I also note that an enhanced DBS check is required: I’m not sure why this should be so, but I think the notion that a person can apply for such a thing (even if it is required) on their own behalf is mistaken. Is it not unlawful to demand a DBS check where none is, in fact, needed?

All the best

Richard.

The daily rate ends up at around £100 a day, which has recently been criticised as too low for a freelance daily rate. And again it is a HLF funded project.
