Hi Essex, Actually, the preferred term IS "disabled visitors" While this differs from other person-centred ways of describing people, it doesn't fit the social model of disability with which many, many disability led organisations go by. The reason for this is that the social model is disability states that the environment is disabling by not providing access to people with impairments, rather than the impairments the person might have being the reason they can't access an environment. To say "a person with disabilities" implies that they are the person with the problem, rather than the lack of access being the problem. If you were to ask organisations such as Unlimited and DCN they both use the term disabled people, and as a disability awareness trainer this is the term we are given. The risk of people taking the mickey and bringing more carers than is needed is far smaller than the risk of upsetting people (and getting the associated bad press) by trying to nail a detailed definition down. Also, a personal hobbyhorse of mine is the use of the term "disabled visitor". The continued use of this propagates the view of the disability before the person. I'd rather "visitors with a disability". Many might scoff at this being too "PC" but it hits at the heart of equality for all visitors and changes, in a positive way, the nature of the "contract" between museum and visitor. My wife works with children with disability (not disabled children). The child comes first, their disability second. Just a thought.
