Job Opportunity at The National Archives

Transfer Manager

You'll make government records publicly available, at the right time and in the right way

The Downing Street Cat. Mrs Thatcher's Kitchen. The Poll Tax Riots. The Fall of the Berlin Wall. These are just some of the subjects covered in the 11 million items held by The National Archives. With a collection like this - the largest in the world - we want to make sure that it continues to grow, making government records from the recent past available and accessible to our diverse audience.

As our Transfer Manager, you'll enable organisations like the Cabinet Office, Foreign and Commonwealth Office and Her Majesty's Treasury to transfer their records to The National Archives in line with their responsibilities under the Public Records Act 1958 and ensure that they are findable and accessible through our online catalogue, Discovery, and that the physical records themselves are preserved in perpetuity. All in an organisation that offers great support and exceptional benefits.

About the role
The National Archives (TNA) offers expert advice and services to Government departments on managing and preserving information and on the timely transfer of records to TNA under the Public Records Act 1958 (PRA). Many departments are holding large quantities of records which need to be transferred to TNA in order to achieve or maintain compliance with the PRA. This, combined with the implementation of the transition to the 20 Year transfer rule introduced under the Constitutional Reform and Governance Act 2010, has led to a significant increase in the quantity of records that government departments are required to transfer to TNA.

Working in the Government Audience Department, the Transfer Manager is responsible for leading visits to government departments and providing technical guidance, training and supervision on new transfers to TNA. The Transfer Manager is also key in developing and implement enhancements and improvements to the transfer process. This post has line management responsibility for some of the Transfer Advisers.

This post involves frequent travel to other Government Departments, including overnight visits. The successful applicant may be required to complete Developed Vetting clearance.
