Dear friends and colleagues

You are kindly invited to our upcoming public two-day symposium organised by us at CARMAH (Centre for Anthropological Research on Museums and Heritage) and hosted by the HKW (Haus der Kulturen der Welt) in collaboration with SAVVY Contemporary. Links below and programme attached. Feel free to share. No registration required. All are welcome to attend.

Anthropology, Art, and Alterity
13-14 September 2018 at HKW (Hirschfeld Bar)

“Alterity” describes a state of being other or different and has become an integral element of postcolonial criticism. The symposium approaches the term both from an artistic and anthropological perspective and asks: What comparisons, relationships, and standards does the construction of alterity imply? Is alterity a relational and situational concept? How are differences manifested? Anthropologists, artists, curators, art historians, and philosophers not only discuss how the concept can be utilized and mobilized in artistic practice, but also shed light on criticism and rethinking of it. With contributions by Emmanuel Alloa (St Gallen, Switzerland), Khadija Zinnenburg Carroll (Birmingham, UK), Leone Contini (artist, Italy), Hamid Dabashi (Columbia, NY), Martin Holbraad (UCL, UK), Andrew Irving (Manchester, UK), Bernhard Leistle (Carleton, Canada), Bonaventure Soh Bejeng Ndikung (SAVVY Contemporary, Berlin), Clio Nicastro (ICI Berlin), Elizabeth A. Povinelli (Columbia, NY), Nigel Rapport (St Andrews, Scotland), Alya Sebti (ifa-Gallery, Berlin), Rupert Stasch (Cambridge, UK), Nora Sternfeld (Kassel, Germany), Julian Warner (Munich, Germany), and others. Organized by Jonas Tinius (CARMAH / Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin) and the Centre for Anthropological Research on Museums and Heritage (CARMAH) as a guest at Haus der Kulturen der Welt and in cooperation with SAVVY Contemporary.
