Many thanks. The credit is really due to Andrew Lycett, who had described Angelou’s opinions on Kipling in his masterful biograph of Kipling nearly 2 years ago.
It was Andrew who encouraged me to write this letter.
Best wishes.

All respect to you Mike for the letter.
As a left-leaning Kipling appreciator, I grow disinterested in The Guardian’s standard of journalism day by day.
A decent journalist across their subject would have made the connection that you have pointed out in your letter and then cried - "Oh the irony!”
Personally, I deeply appreciate that there are well-read people still living on this planet who can make these connections. The Guardian really does need some journalists who are as well read. Not just in literature but history as well.
Best wishes

Please can you post this comment on their Facebook page? Nothing like pointing out to the young that they need to do their research before jumping in feet first….
Many thanks

Many will have seen the story recently that the words of ‘If’ which had been painted on a wall at Manchester University Students’ Union had been erased because the students considered Kipling Imperialist and racist. In its place they inscribed the Maya Angelou poem ‘Still I Rise’.Whatever one may think of their opinion of Kipling, it is rather ironic that Angelou herself had a soft spot for his work, and particularly for ‘If’.As Andrew Lycett points out in his biography, she wrote (of a difficult time in her life when she was a young, single mother) “I could, and often did to my baby and myself, recite … Kipling’s ‘If’…” (in Gather Together in my Name). She also wrote, in I Know Why the Caged Birds Sing, that she “…enjoyed and respected Kipling …” and that, eventually, ‘If’ was supplanted by another uplifting work, ‘Invictus’.
