Hi all,

I’m working on a Discovery Science show being produced by Windfall Films. I’m on the hunt for a physicist or perhaps a forensic anthropologist to help us with some filming.

The programme is exploring mythical creatures and the civilisations that believed in them. One episode is looking at witches, and we would like to visualise the idea of the ‘swimming trial’ used to determine if someone was a witch or not - their hands and feet were bound together before throwing them in water, then if they floated they were a witch and if they sank they were innocent (although likely drowned anyway.) We would like to demonstrate the concept that there is a natural variation in whether someone floats or sinks, given their body mass and fat to muscle ratio as well as the saltiness of the water. Perhaps using lean vs fatty cuts of animal meat within a large water tank, and explaining the factors of displacement coming in to play - although we’re very open to suggestions if someone has a more scientific approach that retains the visual elements.

So we’re looking for a physicist dealing with buoyancy or a forensic anthropologist who specialises in drowning, ideally with an interest in history as well, to bring this subject to life. We’re filming in London and East Anglia, so it would need to be someone who lives in this area or is happy to travel. We can cover all expenses and equipment required.

Please do get in touch if this sounds of interest to you, or you know of anyone who might be appropriate.

Many thanks,
Fiona
