Why should students be deemed less culpable than the companies? They're adults who know perfectly well what they're doing. Indeed - it is their demand for essays that sustains the industry.

I’d like to add to Phil’s email that the last thing we should be doing is criminalising students, it is the companies and those who work for them that should be the target of any legislation. A recent paper by Phil Newton and Michael Draper sets out a legal
approach to achieve this that should have the desired effect, if the uk government can be persuaded to implement it.
There is no illusion that any legislation will stop these companies operating or setting up elsewhere, but it will provide a good way to highlight to students that these companies are illegal and using their services will not help them to legitimately qualify
for their degree. Hopefully many students will be persuaded by this message and begin to reduce the market demand for the use of such companies.
It is likely that the Turnitin authorship tools, and other software being developed at present for the same purpose, will generate a new “arms race” escalation with the companies, but we will find a way to respond.
The research Phil highlighted is beginning to yield some evidence that helps us better understand students’ motivation for using ghost writers. We all need to make use of that intelligence, and the tools that have been developed, to improve support and information
for students and maximise use of all available deterrents.
By no means an easy job, but we have to keep working at it.
