medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Not to forget Pelzer's valuable Supplement:

Auguste Pelzer, Abréviations latines médiévales. Supplément au Dizionario di abbreviature latine ed italiane de Adriano Cappelli. Louvain: Publications Universitaires, Paris: Béatrice-Nauwelaerts, 1964 (Centre de Wulf-Mansion: Recherches de philosophie ancienne et médiévale), viii + 86 pp.

During his many years of work in the Biblioteca Vaticana Pelzer had annotated his copy of Cappelli with additions found mostly in Latin mss. of the scholastic period. Shortly before his death he transcribed these marginalia into a listing with alphabetic order, which was then edited posthumously by Adriaan Patin. Very useful for resolving some of the more esoteric abbreviations of scholastic terminology and author references.

We should nevertheless keep in mind that the inscription forwarded by Paul Chandler seems not to be simply a case of habitual scribal abbreviation but rather of the type studied by Traube and which may be described -- quick and dirty -- as an invocational and devotional practice of using isolated letters or suspended forms denoting, primarily, divine names or sacred words. They are often derived from older scribal usage (like IHL which may also occur as habitual form of abbreviating "Isra(h)el" in biblical mss.) or integrate current scribal short hand but require a study of their own.

Best, O.

Another bit:

David Heimann and Richard Kay produced an English translation of all of the introductory material in the 3rd edition, Milan, 1929,.

This is online at:       https://kuscholarworks.ku.edu/bitstream/handle/1808/1821/47cappelli.pdf

Online instances of Cappelli's 1912 _Lexicon Abbreviaturarum_, published in 1928 by J. J. Weber in Leipzig as a Zweite verbesserte Auflage (in 1901 Weber had published a similar version of the Cappelli in its 1899 original) and with its front matter translated into German (but the explanations of the abbreviations all remain in Latin), are available at:

A digitized version(of the 1912 edition) is available online at the following address:

http://www.hist.msu.ru/Departments/Medieval/Cappelli/

A bit awkward to use, but no more so than the original.

I have never been able to locate a digitized copy on any of the usual sites. According to the Karlsruhe catalogue (KIT Bibliothek) Persee ( www.Persee.fr< http://www.Persee.fr>) has a copy available, but I seem unable to reach that site tonight. Hathi Trust does as well, but one needs to be connected with a member institution to use Hathi Trust. But the usual suspects for locating ditized copies of out-of-copyright books (the Internet Archive; Google) come up empty.

On ABE Books, a search for the title brings up a list of 42 copies, starting at US$34.22. And on Maremagnum (in Italy) there are 21 copies, at various prices.

The back pages of Cappelli's Dizionario di abbreviature latine ed italiane has a section: Sigle ed abbreviature epigrafiche. There is a fairly recent edition for sale.

Isn't there a good standard source reference work for Latin abbreviations?

Could T F be a half-erased Roman I (with cross-bars) E for IE(sus)?

Dear Paul,

If I understand you right, the inscription is somehting like

S^ MARI^
I
H
L
TF
XP
X(?)

IHL is frequent for I(sra)H(e)L = Israel (see L. Traube, Nomina scara, 1907, pp. 106ss.), and XP (or XPC, XPS) for XR(ICTOC) = Christus. I have nothing, however, for TF and X(?) that would help to establish a coherent phrasing.

Kind regards, O.

A colleague is puzzling over a fragment of a fresco of the Virgin Mary and (probably) Christ. Over Mary is written horizontally S (abbrev sign over) MARI (abbrev sign over) for SANCTA MARIA, and then vertically under the S the following letters:  I H L TF (conjoined = some form of tuus filius?). Then XP, then probably X. Perhaps the S is meant to be read as part of the sequence.

Does anyone have any suggestion how to interpret these letters? -- Paul
